DTE plans new reactor at Fermi

04 April 2007

[DTE Energy, 12 February] DTE Energy, parent company of Detroit Edison, announced that it will prepare a combined construction and operating licence (COL) application for a new nuclear power plant on the site of the Fermi plant in Michigan, USA. The company expects to submit its application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) by the end of 2008. DTE Energy chairman and CEO Anthony Earley said, "Let me be clear that we have not yet made a final decision to build. Rather, we are preserving our option to build at some point in the future by beginning the long and complex process now." He added that, "With mounting evidence of the negative impact of carbon emissions and greenhouse gases, nuclear power is an attractive alternative to fossil-fuel generation." Earley said that DTE Energy is also evaluating several options to meet the expected increase in demand for electricity in Michigan, the home of the American car industry, including coal-fired generation. He said, "We will never run an auto assembly line or a cold-rolled steel mill using windmills or solar panels. You need big baseload nuclear and coal power plants to keep them running."
