Jaczko designated as NRC chairman

14 May 2009

President Barack Obama has announced that Gregory Jaczko has been designated as chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). He will replace Dale Klein, whose term of office as chairman was set to end in June 2011. Klein will remain as a commissioner until that time. "I am honoured President Obama has entrusted me with the responsibility of serving as the chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, " Jaczko said in a statement. He added, "I look forward to continuing to work closely with the talented and dedicated agency staff and my fellow commissioners." His term of office ends in June 2013. Jaczko, a physicist, is currently the only Democrat on the commission. He served as science advisor to Nevada Senator Harry Reid, and managed Reid's opposition to the Yucca Mountain waste repository project before he was sworn in as a commissioner of the NRC in January 2005.
