Progress eyes greenfield site in Florida for new plant

12 January 2007

[Progress Energy, 12 December] Progress Energy has named a greenfield site in southern Levy County, Florida, USA, as the preferred location for construction of a potential new nuclear power plant. The company said it is considering building one or two new reactors at the 1200 ha site. The first unit would be expected to cost $2.5-3.5 billion – the second somewhat less – following a licence application in 2008. The proposed site is just 13 km from Progress’ existing Crystal River single-unit nuclear power plant. The company said that the proximity of the site to the Crystal River plant would provide opportunities for efficiencies in shared support functions. Progress informed the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) a year ago of its plan to submit a combined construction and operating licence (COL) application for a potential new nuclear power plant. It is the first greenfield site to be considered among the new generation of nuclear power projects in the USA.
