Rostov heroes excel at work and play

Players from the Rostov plant have dominated a tennis competition open to all Russian nuclear power plant workers, while five others at the plant have been awarded the title 'Hero of Nuclear Energy' for their day-to-day work.

A competition held at Rostov to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the commissioning of reactor 1 saw some 48 participants from ten of Russia's nuclear power plants. During an opening ceremony, Ludmila Tkachenko, deputy chairman of the Volgodonsk city government, said: "I admire the work of Rosenergoatom Concern on the organization of sports competitions. There has already become a good tradition for atomists to hold various sports championships, competitions and tournaments in our city."
The plant has previously hosted and won medals in the All-Russia Hand-To-Hand Combat Tournament and its workers have cycled the 800 kilometre journey home from the Zaporizhzhya plant in Ukraine.
Playing with home advantage, Rostov tennis experts claimed a total of nine medals. Natalya Byvsheva took the women's singles, while Alexander Kudryavtsev held on to the men's under-35s singles title he won last year. Taking silver and bronze medals in the same category were Viktor Shpak and Andrey Byvshev. The men's 35-50s singles was won by Yury Noskov and in the men's over-50s singles Alexander Tereshkov and Levon Babayan came second and third, respectively.
The women's doubles saw the Rostov pairing of Natalya Byvsheva and Yevgeniya Maslova take gold, while the plant's Marina Nazarchik teamed with Irina Boldovskaya of the Kalinin plant for silver. Rostov's Andrey Byvshev and Viktor Shpak took the men's doubles.
Atomic heroes
At a slower pace but with no less commitment to excellence, two current employees and three retirees from the Rostov plant have been recognized for their services to the Russian nuclear industry by being awarded the title 'Hero of Nuclear Energy'.
Training instructor Vera Leonenko and shift supervisor for the site's chemical plant Valentina Petrova received medals for their "years of diligent work in nuclear energy, contributing to the safe, reliable and efficient operation" of the plant. Meanwhile, three retirees - Blikbaeva Gaul, a former dosimeter laboratory worker; Denisenya Love, a retired instrumentation and electrical control engineer; and Peter Pashalidi, former deputy chief of the thermal measurement and automation repair shop - were also honoured with the title.
Rosenergoatom, the plant owner, said that the presentation of certificates and medals "was held in a festive atmosphere."
