Under the long-term agreement with South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G), Westinghouse will provide fuel fabrication services for the existing 966 MWe pressurized water reactor at Summer, as well as for two new AP1000 units planned there.

The first fuel delivery is scheduled to take place in 2012. The contract will run until 2033.

The AP1000 consortium of Shaw and Westinghouse signed an engineering, procurement and construction contract (EPC) for two 1117 MWe AP1000 reactors at the Summer site in May 2008. A combined construction and operating licence (COL) is expected to be issued for the two new units late 2011 or early 2012. The first unit could enter commercial operation by 2016, and the second in 2019.

In a statement, Westinghouse said: "The agreement is consistent with the utility's contract with Westinghouse and the Shaw Group to provide engineering, procurement and construction services for the two new AP1000 units."

Joe Belechak, senior vice president of the Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel product line, commented, "Clearly, Westinghouse and SCE&G will benefit by the long-term nature of this agreement."

He added, "It is also important to point out that this fuel will be fabricated at our site in Columbia, South Carolina, where Westinghouse has made significant investments over recent years to help ensure we have the capacity to provide the high-quality fuel the growing nuclear energy industry will need in coming years and decades."
