Construction of Tsuruga 3 and 4 to start in 2012

02 February 2011

Having previously announced a further delay in the construction of the Tsuruga 3 and 4 nuclear power reactors, Japan Atomic Power Co (Japco) has now said that it plans to start building the units in March 2012, 16 months later than planned. Construction of the two 1538 MWe advanced pressurized water reactors (APWRs) had been scheduled to start in October 2010, but Japco said that this had been delayed by ongoing safety checks by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (Meti). Unit 3 had been expected to begin operating in July 2017, with unit 4 starting up in March 2017. However, under the new schedule, Tsuruga units 3 and 4 will begin operating in July 2017 and July 2018, respectively.
