AtomEnergoProekt is celebrating approval of major component installations at the forthcoming Kalinin nuclear power plant in Russia. Chief among these is the 300 tonne reactor pressure vessel, put in place using the polar crane itself weighing 320 tonnes. In the non-nuclear part of the plant some 1800 tonnes of kit is now in place including steam turbines, condensers, separators and superheaters and this is linked up by about 1500 tonnes of piping. The installation work was approved by regulator Rostechnadzor on 26 January and the reactor should start up in late 2011.
