Steam generator installation under way at Haiyang 2

The first of two steam generators has been installed at the second AP1000 unit under construction at Haiyang in China's Shandong province.

The component - measuring 24 metres long, 5.5 metres in diameter and weighing 625 tonnes - was installed on 6 July using a crane in an operation lasting almost four hours, State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC) announced.
The two steam generators for Haiyang 2 were delivered to the construction site in March by Shanghai Nuclear Electric Power Company.
In addition to the two Westinghouse AP1000 units being built at Haiyang, two more are under construction at the Sanmen site in Zhejiang province. Sanmen unit 1 is expected to be the first AP1000 to begin operating. All four Chinese AP1000s are scheduled to be in operation by 2016.
In April 2007, Westinghouse signed a $350 million contract with South Korea's Doosan Heavy Industries for two pressure vessels and four steam generators for Sanmen 1 and Haiyang 1. The pressure vessels for the other two units were made by Chinese manufacturers: China First Heavy Industries for Sanmen 2 and Shanghai Electric for Haiyang 2. Steam generators for Sanmen 2 and Haiyang 2 were manufactured by Harbin Power Equipment Company and Shanghai Electric, respectively, though a contract for Sanmen 2 steam generators was let to Spain's ENSA in 2011.
Four AP1000 reactors are currently being built in the USA - two each at Vogtle and Summer - while three AP1000s are also proposed for the Moorside site in the UK.
