Amec and ANDR join forces for Romanian waste

06 November 2014

Consultancy and engineering company Amec is to work with Romanian nuclear and radioactive waste agency ANDR (Agenţia Nucleară şi pentru Deşeuri Radioactive) to develop a national strategy for nuclear decommissioning and long-term waste storage under a newly signed memorandum of understanding (MoU).

The agreement was signed in Bucharest by ANDR president Florin Tatar and Amec vice-president Andy White, and will see UK-based Amec provide expert technical advice to the Romanian agency, which reports to the country's Ministry of Economy.

ANDR is responsible for the safe storage and disposal of radioactive waste, including used nuclear fuel, on behalf of the Romanian government. The agency is currently working to develop a repository for low- and intermediate-level waste, DFDMSA, at Saligny and has carried out site characterization work.

In March 2014 ANDR signed an MoU on cooperation in the field of waste management with the UK's National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), covering cooperation on radioactive waste management and the decommissioning of nuclear facilities.
