Developers of new nuclear power plant projects in the UK agree that an experienced supply chain, together with a stable reactor design, will be key to significantly driving down construction costs, delegates heard at the Global Nuclear Investment Summit held yesterday at London's Guildhall. The event was hosted by global nuclear energy financial services provider Ocean Nuclear and the Financial Times.

Urenco tails plant to start up in 2018

Uranium enrichment company Urenco yesterday said it expects to commission the Tails Management Facility (TMF) at Capenhurst in the UK in 2018, after construction delays. The facility, to deconvert depleted uranium hexafluoride tails, had previously been expected to enter service this year.

Rolls-Royce sees civilian nuclear power growth

Rolls-Royce said today the long-term outlook for its nuclear business was positive with renewed activities in the civilian market. There are "encouraging opportunities" in the UK and China in particular, alongside its nuclear submarine activities, the company said on the release of its 2016 financial results.

Bats delay leading clean-up project

[BNG, 10 May] Roosting bats have caused a four-month delay to the UK's leading clean-up program. A colony of protected Pipistrelle bats has colonizedthe structure of the former Capenhurst gaseous diffusion uranium enrichment plant, which is currently being demolished by British Nuclear Group (BNG). After hibernating over the winter, the tiny flying mammals are now fully active and BNG is concerned they may begin to breed. Hoping to stick to its 2009 completion date, the company is consulting conservationists and investing in new roosting boxes so that the bats may live elsewhere on site.
