Kaiga 3 connected to the grid

[NPCIL, 16 April] Unit 3 of the Kaiga nuclear power plant was connected to the grid on 14 April, Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd (NPCIL) reported. The unit was first connected to the grid on 11 April following authorization from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) and subsequently shut down for conducting tests. Kaiga 3 is a 220 MWe pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) in Uttar Kannada in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka. Construction of the unit began in March 2002, and it achieved criticality - a sustained reaction - on 26 February. The plant will gradually be raised to full power after completion of mandatory tests. Kaiga 4 - another 220 MWe PHWR - is set to start operating by the end of 2007. Four further reactors are currently under construction in India (two 1000 MWe PWRs at Rawatbhata and two 220 MWe PHWRs at Kudankulam) and are scheduled to begin operating within the next two years.
