30% nuclear for Romania

22 February 2007

[Xinhua, 22 February] Romanian Minister of Economy and Trade, Varujan Vosganian, has confirmed plans for a future energy mix of 28-30% nuclear, 30-35% hydro and 35% coal, oil and gas. Speaking at a seminar on the country’s energy strategy, Vosganian pointed to units 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda plant as main economic targets for 2007. Cernavoda 1 already accounts for about 10% of the country’s electricity; Cernavoda 2 is undergoing commissioning with start up expected in April 2007; and work on units 3 and 4 is slated to begin in 2008, so the 30% target appears to be in line with the country’s current nuclear plans.
