Nuclear "almost perfect choice" for Duke

24 January 2007

[Reuters, 24 January] Duke Energy of the USA is investing in clean energy sources in anticipation of future environmental restrictions, according to the company's Chief Executive, James Rogers. He said, "We need energy efficiency, we need clean coal, we need nuclear, we need renewables, we need all these things to serve our customers." He added, "I have a responsibility to reduce my emissions of carbon dioxide, and I think I can do it with this blend of products." Duke is seeking to build super-modern coal facilities in Indiana and North Carolina, and is working with Southern Co to construct a $6 billion nuclear power plant in Cherokee County, South Carolina. Nuclear energy - which Rogers called "almost the perfect choice" - will become increasingly relied upon in the United States, although probably not for a decade or more, he said.
