Estonian proposal for undersea reactor

[RIA Novosti, 20 June] The Estonian Maritime Academy has reportedly submitted a project to Estonian power company Eesti Energia proposing the construction of an undersea nuclear power plant. The 1000 MWt plant would be sited on a granite shelf in the Muuga Bay to the east of Tallinn. The costs of an undersea nuclear powerplant would be much greater than that of one built on land. Inaddition, local environmentalists have expressed doubts concerning theecological safety of such a giant undertaking on the sea shelf. Juri Kann, head of the academy, told the Arileht newspaper, "The construction of a nuclear reactor on the seabed is completely safe and local authorities would not object to this project."
