FPL seeks approval for nuclear expansion

Florida Power & Light (FPL) applied to the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) on 17 August for permission to uprate its four existing reactors (two pressurized water reactors each at Turkey Point and St Lucie) by 100 MWe each. As previously reported, this additional capacity is expected to be installed by the end of 2012. The uprate project must also be approved by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Last month FPL announced that it planned to apply to the NRC before the end of September to uprate the four units. The company previously conducted uprates of the units during the 1980s and 1990s. FPL also plans to soon apply to the PSC for permission to construct two new reactors at Turkey Point by 2020, which could add a further 3000 MWe of capacity.
