'Nukees' run marathon to promote nuclear

26 October 2007

[donga.com, 22 October] Twenty three members of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power's (KHNP's) Wolsong nuclear power plant's running club - known as the 'Running Nukees' - participated in and completed both the half- and full-marathon at the 2007 Dong-A Ilbo Gyeongju International Marathon. Plant workers have ran in the marathon for the past nine years in order to "bridge the gap between the nuclear power plant and the people." Choi Gi-young, head of the Safety Section at Wolsong unit 2, said, "We will keep running and running until people no longer have vague fears about nuclear power plants." Lim Ki-chul, head of the Chemical Technology Section, said, "I ran with my son in a hope that the nuclear power keeps working through generations." His son, Lim Heon-seok, who works in the plant's Measurement Control Section, added, "I ran on behalf of the wish to build a nuclear power plant that is loved by the people." Seventy workers out of 1300 at the plant belong to the 'Running Nukees' running club, which was formed in 1999. 'Nukee' is an abridged word derived from 'nuclear keeper'. The club members trained along a 6-kilometre stretch of land around the plant.
