Tianwan 2 enters commercial operation

16 August 2007

Russia's AtomStoyExport (ASE) announced that unit 2 of the Tianwan nuclear power plant in Lianyungang, Jiangsu province, China, entered commercial operation at 00:15 on 16 August. The 1000 MWe VVER pressurized water reactor has been constructed by ASE for owners Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation (JNPC). ASE will officially hand over the plant to JNPC in mid-September. Commercial operation had been slated for September, but the unit has already produced 700 million kWh of electricity since being connected to the grid in May. AtomStroyExport built both Tianwan power units, and signed a contract in October 2006 to build two more. In total the site has room for up to eight reactors. Tianwan 2 becomes China's eleventh operating nuclear power reactor.
