Halt ordered at Swedish waste store

[SSI, 30 May]Operations at the low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste storenear Sweden's Forsmark plant have been ordered to halt by the SwedishRadiation Protection Agency (SSI). The agency reported that thefacility's operator, SKB, had failed to produce sufficient evidencethat operations meet radiation protection standards. Furthermore, SSIsaid that SKB have exceeded radiation protection limits and its methodsfor determining the mix of radioisotopes in certain wastes wereinsufficient. SSI added that the shortcomings pose no immediate threatto the environment or the public. According to an SSI release,operations at the facility must stop on 21 June.
