Areva Dongfang awarded pump contract

21 September 2007

[Areva, 20 September; Bloomberg, 21 September] Areva Dongfang has received a letter of intent to supply 18 reactor coolant pumps to Chinese utility China Nuclear Power Engineering Co (CNPEC). Areva said that the initial part of the contract, which should be signed by the end of 2007, is worth over $140 million. Manufacturing of the pumps is scheduled to start in 2008, with delivery over the 2010 to 2012 period. The pumps will be installed at second-generation 1000 MW plants in Fujian and Liaoning provinces. A further similar order could also soon be placed, Areva reported. Areva Dongfang is a joint venture created in August 2005 between Areva of France and Chinese power equipment manufacturer Dongfang Electric Corp. Meanwhile, France's finance minister, Christine Lagarde, said during a visit to Beijing that talks between Areva and China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding Co (CGNPC) on the supply of two 1600 MWe EPR reactors are continuing. She said, "Negotiations are progressing well, that's all I can say." The contract is valued at some $8.45 billion.
