Thai committee to consider nuclear energy

[Dow Jones, 2 March] Thailand's National Energy Policy Council has approved the formation of a committee to study the feasibility of constructing a nuclear power plant in the country, according to Energy Minister Piyasvasti Amranand. He said that the committee would be formed soon and would take about seven years to reach a decision on whether Thailand should construct a plant. Amranand said that Thailand needs to consider using nuclear energy due to limited supply and rising prices of gas and oil. Among the options under the draft power development plan for 2007-2021 is the construction of 5000 MWe of nuclear generating capacity, starting up in 2020-21.
