Areva to produce Olkiluoto concrete

25 April 2007

[Lemminkainen, 25 April] Under a commercial agreement signed today, Forssan Betoni Oy - a subsidiary of Finnish construction group Lemminkainen Corp - will no longer supply concrete for construction of the third reactor at Teollisuuden Voima Oy's (TVO's) Olkiluoto nuclear power plant in Finland. The company was awarded a contract by the Areva-Siemens consortium in July 2004 for the supply of ready-mix concrete for the entire reactor project. Areva itself will now be responsible for production of the concrete, for which it has built a new batching plant on the Olkiluoto site. Forssan Betoni's plants will serve as back-ups for the new batching plant. Forssan Betoni will, however, continue to supply concrete until the end of the project to Siemens' subcontractors working on the turbine island. The scheduled start up of the reactor has been delayed by about two years partly due to questions about the quality of the concrete used in the base of the reactor. However, Lemminkainen said that studies did not reveal any deficiencies in the ready-mix concrete delivered by Forssan Betoni to the project.
