China and Belgium have signed a framework agreement on cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The agreement was one of several accords signed in Brussels yesterday during a meeting between Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel.

[Associated Press, Xinhua News Agency, 15 February] An agreement to establish a joint venture company to build and operate a 4 x 1000 MWe nuclear power plant at Lishanhe in Yiyang City, in Hunan province, was signed on 14 February. The $5 billion project, to be built in two stages, was approved by the State Development & Reform Commission in November 2005. The new company - Hunan Taohua River Nuclear Power Co Ltd - brings together China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC), China Three Gorges Project Corp, China Resources Co Ltd and Hunan Xiangtou Holdings Group Co Ltd. The plant is expected to be the first nuclear power station to be constructed in China's inland areas.

Unit 6 at the Tianwan nuclear power plant in China's Jiangsu province was connected to the grid for the first time yesterday, according to the China Nuclear Energy Association. The milestone - at 8.27pm local time - marked the unit's entry into the grid-connected commissioning phase.

The first domestically-produced centrifuge has been successfully installed at a uranium enrichment plant at the Lanzhou Nuclear Fuel Complex, China National Nuclear Corporation announced. China has previously relied on Russian enrichment technology.
