Jaitapur land sale approval

17 August 2009

[Times of India, 15 August] The Jaitapur nuclear power plant took a step forward with approval from the Bombay High Court for purchase of the necessary land. Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) may now purchase the plot, on which it wants to build at least two - but up to six - Areva EPRs. On approving the land sale, the court said, "The power crisis is assuming alarming proportions in India," adding that "load shedding has become a common feature" and "the power situation in Maharastra [state] is particularly grave." With two EPRs the power plant would add 3300 MWe of baseload supply to the grid.
