Armed robbery at Pelindaba

09 November 2007

An attack on South Africa's Pelindaba nuclear research site has resulted in a worker being shot. Anton Gerber, an operations officer in the Emergency Services department, reportedly tackled armed men who entered the emergency control room of the site on 7 November. He was rushed to hospital and is in a stable condition. Site operator Necsa, South Africa's state nuclear research company, described the event as an armed robbery in a short statement. A pilot nuclear fuel plant is under development at Pelindaba to provide fuel for the demonstration pebble-bed modular reactor and the Safari-1 research reactor has operated there since 1965.
