EDF Energy in record UK supply contract
Monday, 1 August 2011
The UK government has awarded EDF Energy the country's largest ever electricity supply contract by annual volume, following a tender process. Under the framework agreement, EDF Energy will supply electricity and energy-related additional goods, works and services to thousands of public buildings across England and Wales, including hospitals, police stations, defence sites, courts, museums and galleries. As part of the deal, EDF Energy will initially supply some 7.6 TWh of electricity annually over four years, starting from April 2012. However, the company said that this volume "could rise significantly during the lifetime of the agreement, dependent on uptake of additional public sector bodies to the framework." As well as supplying electricity, EDF Energy will provide advice to help government departments use energy more efficiently and reduce emissions. EDF Energy produces about one-sixth of the UK's annual electricity generation from its fleet of eight nuclear power stations, which has a combined capacity of almost 9000 MW. In 2010, the company supplied its UK customers with 63.6 TWh of electricity.
