Nuclear generates about a fifth of Spain's electricity, but the plan is to close all its power reactors by 2035. A number of countries have had second thoughts on phasing out their nuclear capacity - will Spain also do so? Forty years after the Chernobyl accident, the largely uninhabited exclusion zone around the nuclear power plant has become a haven for wildlife, as well as providing the world with a unique living laboratory for scientific study of the impact of radioactive elements. A shelter was rapidly built over the ruins of Chernobyl reactor 4 in 1986, but it was never meant to be a long-term fix. So the giant New Safe Confinement arch, designed to last 100 years, was built to fully enclose the area and allow the safe removal of the original shelter and the remains of the destroyed unit.
