Review for OPG's waste decision

12 January 2007

[CNSC, 22 December] A panel should review Ontario Power Generation's (OPG's) decision to dispose of high-level radioactive waste in a deep geological repository, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has recommended to the Canadian Minister of the Environment. An Environmental Assessment is nevertheless required by law. OPG's move followed the recommendations of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, a committee set up in 2002 to recommend a long-term approach to managing Canada's stocks of used nuclear fuel.
