Rosenergoatom bids for TACIS project

[Rosenergoatom, 2 July] A meeting between Russia's Rosenergoatom and the European Commission (EC) was held on 27-28 June at the shutdown Garigliano nuclear power plant in Italy. The key topic of the meeting was Rosenergoatom's bid for a new TACIS program on nuclear safety for 2007-2008. Rosenergoatom, which operates all ten of Russia's operating nuclear power plants, is interested in obtaining information from west European operators that can help it modernize and enhance the safety of its plants, in particular concerning maintenance, diagnostics and probability safety assessments. The total cost of Rosenergoatom's bid is some EUR32 million ($44 million). The meeting was also attended by representatives of west European participants in TACIS, including SOGIN, Iberdrola, British Energy, Tractabel, TVO and RWE. Rosenergoatom and the EC have been cooperating under the TACIS program since 1991. TACIS is an abbreviation of "Technical Aid to the Commonwealth of Independent States" program, an institutional restructuring program implemented by the EC to help members of the Commonwealth of Independent States (as well as Mongolia), in their transition to democratic market-oriented economies. There are currently 50 TACIS projects underway, with a total value of some EUR80 million ($110 million).
