Russia's cooperation declaration with NEA

22 March 2007

[NEA, 21 March] Russia and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD's) Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) signed a joint declaration on cooperation on 21 March. The declaration was signed during a ceremony in Moscow by Konstantin Pulikovsky, chairman of the Russian Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service (Rostechnadzor) and NEA Director-General Luis Echvarri. The joint declaration opens the way for Russia to participate as an observer in all of the NEA's standing technical committees and their working groups. Russia has been an observer in the NEA's two safety committees since 1996 and has been an ad hoc observer in the Nuclear Law Committee since 1993. In addition, Russia has been involved in several NEA projects over the years. Echvarri said, "This joint declaration is highly significant and an important step towards strengthening ties between the Russian Federation and the NEA." Russia is not yet a member of the OECD itself.
