Two orders for ENSA

27 January 2011

Spanish manufacturer Equipos Nucleares SA (ENSA) has recently signed two supply contracts. One covers components for the used fuel storage pools at Shin Ulchin nuclear power plant in South Korea and the other is for the steam generators of Sanmen 2 in China.

The €5 million ($6.8 million) Shin Ulchin contract was signed with project manager Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power. It includes the design and manufacture of racks for the used fuel storage pools of the plant, which will host two APR1400 reactors.

According to a statement by the State Industrial Holdings Company (Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales, SEPI) the project will take 23,000 worker hours to complete. This is a reduction in time required by older methods of construction, achieved by the use of an ENSA patented process which replaces mechanical joints with welded joints.

The contract for the Sanmen steam generators was finalised with Shanghai Electric group earlier this month. A ceremony in Moncloa Palace marked the occasion and brought together Spanish President José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang.

ENSA's Santander facility will supply three of the four main sections of the two steam generators. The last part is to be made by Shanghai Nuclear Electric Power Company, which will then assemble and finish the steam generators. When complete they will each measure 24 metres long, 5.5 metres in diameter and weigh 640 tonnes.
