UK duo offer to partner in new build

[Sunday Telegraph, 3 July] Two currently non-nuclear UK power companies have submitted a joint proposal to partner British Energy (BE) in building new nuclear power stations, according to reports in the UK press. Centrica and Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE) are two of the UK's largest power companies. Centrica owns seven gas-fired power stations. SSE has ownership interest in over 10,000 MW of thermal and renewable generation and owns and operates over half the country's renewable capacity. Both companies already buy output from BE, and could offer access to retail customers. BE announced earlier this year that it is seeking partners to help fund its investment in a possible new nuclear build program. Four reactor vendors have submitted details of potential reactor designs to the UK government for evaluation.
