Ukraine's nuclear regulatory authority has warned that the annual "fire season" is approaching in the area including Chernobyl and says that the usual firefighting capacity is not available as a result of the Russian occupation.

About half of the staff who were on shift on the day Russian forces took control of the Chernobyl site on 24 February, have been able to return home, Ukraine's nuclear regulator has told the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The International Atomic Energy Agency director general says consultations about an agreement for the safety and security of Ukraine's nuclear facilities are on-going.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said it had been told that Ukraine’s largest nuclear power plant has lost connection to a third power line, but two others remain available.

The eighth European Union-International Atomic Energy Agency Senior Officials Meeting discussed opportunities to deepen cooperation in a range of areas, including collaboration on the development and deployment of small modular reactors.

Ukraine says that the external power supply to Chernobyl has been restored five days after it was lost after power lines to the area were damaged during fighting.

The head of Ukraine’s Energoatom told the International Atomic Energy Agency on Sunday that power could be restored to Chernobyl after workers fixed the damaged power line - but on Monday Ukraine's energy company reported it was damaged again "before the power supply was fully restored".

The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, held talks in Turkey with Ukraine's foreign minister and Russia's foreign minister and said "we are making progress on the safety and security of nuclear facilities in Ukraine".
