The excavation of the first five actual disposal tunnels has been completed at the Onkalo underground used nuclear fuel repository near Olkiluoto, Finnish radioactive waste management company Posiva Oy announced.

Orano has been awarded a contract by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency for the transport and treatment in France of 731 used fuel assemblies from the Fugen experimental Advanced Thermal Reactor in Japan. In 2018, Orano was contracted to conduct preparatory work for the transport operations.

ČEZ said the contracts with the US and French companies for the supply of fuel assemblies for the Temelín nuclear power plant for the coming years were important for ensuring diversification of supplies.

Ukraine's Energoatom has taken a UAH1.5 billion (USD51 million) loan from Ukrgasbank to buy more nuclear fuel from Westinghouse. It follows the energy giant's decision to stop using Russian fuel earlier this year.

The "vast majority" of uranium delivered in the USA in 2021 was of foreign origin, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Uranium inventory held by US brokers and traders has grown for the second consecutive year, and has almost tripled since 2019.
