Jordan inaugurates region's first synchrotron
King Abdullah II of Jordan yesterday officially opened the Middle East's first particle accelerator. Scientists from across the region will use the Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME) for advanced research projects.

Long-term vision for Chalk River
Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has begun dialogue with potential participants after unveiling its vision for the organisation's future. The long-term strategy foresees infrastructure investments of more than CAD1.2 billion ($873 million) over ten years and includes the development of a new small modular reactor (SMR) at Chalk River by 2026.

The UK should focus on developing small modular reactors (SMRs) to secure its nuclear industry after the country's exit from the European Union, according to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. In its report
Leaving the EU, the Euratom Treaty Part 2: A Framework for the Future
, issued on 5 May, IMechE says SMRs could "present the UK with key export opportunities and return the country to the international nuclear reactor supply arena".

Tokamak Energy turns on ST40 fusion reactor
The UK's newest fusion reactor has been turned on for the first time and has officially achieved first plasma. The reactor aims to produce a record-breaking plasma temperature of 100 million degrees for a privately-funded venture. This is seven times hotter than the centre of the Sun and the temperature necessary for controlled fusion.

New research reactor fuel completes irradiation tests

UK plasma exhaust research receives funding

Russia seeks closer nuclear ties with Japan
Russia is ready to build "effective and full-scale" cooperation with Japan in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy to harness the innovations of Russian scientists, Alexey Likhachov, director-general of state nuclear corporation Rosatom said this week. Likhachov began a working visit to Japan on 4 April, where he said in an interview with the

that cooperation between the two countries was "becoming an urgent necessity".
