Studsvik awarded AGR fuel testing contract
Sweden-based Studsvik has signed a seven-year contract with the UK's EDF Energy for carrying out materials testing on irradiated fuel and fuel components from Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors (AGRs). The contract - worth SKr13.5 million ($2 million) per year - may be extended for a further ten years. Studsvik said that the fuel and materials tests will support of the safety cases and operation of EDF Energy's UK AGR units, second generation of British gas-cooled reactors using graphite moderator and carbon dioxide as coolant. AGR fuel comprises uranium oxide pellets, enriched to 2.5%-3.5%, in stainless steel tubes. The AGR was developed from the earlier Magnox design. EDF Energy operates 14 AGRs at seven sites in the UK. They are currently scheduled to be permanently shut down between 2016 and 2023.
