Kaiga 3 enters commercial operation

Unit 3 of the Kaiga nuclear power plant began commercial operation on 6 May, Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd (NPCIL) reported. Kaiga 3 is a 220 MWe pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) in Uttar Kannada in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka. Construction of the unit began in March 2002. It achieved criticality on 26 February and was connected to the grid on 11 April. Kaiga 4 - also a 220 MWe PHWR - is scheduled to begin operating by the end of 2007.
