Don't you know that you're toxic?
Friday, 21 January 2011
In the USA, confectionary distribution company Candy Dynamics has been left with a sour taste in its mouth after it issued a voluntary recall of one its Toxic Waste brands on 13 January. The Nuclear Sludge chew bar range was recalled after elevated levels of lead were found in the cherry flavouring of one batch. Tests carried out by the California Department of Public Health indicated lead levels of 0.24 parts per million (ppm), far in excess of Food and Drug Administration guidelines of 0.1 ppm. Such a level could, according to the department, potentially cause health problems particularly in small children and pregnant women. So far no illnesses have been reported due to the chew bars, but the company has issued the recall 'out of an abundance of caution'. The cherry chew, sour apple and blue raspberry flavours of the product have been called back, although the sour apple and blue raspberry flavours had already been discontinued. No other Toxic Waste product has been affected.
