WNN: Dounreay mistakes admitted
[UKAEA, 15 February] A Scottish court has handed down a fine of £140,000 ($272,000) to the UKAEA for four breaches of the Radioactive Substances Act 1963 between that year and 1984 at Dounreay. UKAEA director of safety, John Crofts, said: "The court today has passed judgement on the standards and practices of waste management more than a quarter of a century ago. We too share the view that this is an unacceptable legacy of the Dounreay experiment." The charges related to the wrongful disposal of radioactive waste in a landfill and failure to prevent the release of radioactive particles to sea. UKAEA pleaded guilty to the charges on 5 February.
