Halt ordered at Swedish waste store

Wednesday, 30 May 2007
[SSI, 30 May] Operations at the low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste store near Sweden's Forsmark plant have been ordered to halt by the Swedish Radiation Protection Agency (SSI). The agency reported that the facility's operator, SKB, had failed to produce sufficient evidence that operations meet radiation protection standards. Furthermore, SSI said that SKB have exceeded radiation protection limits and its methods for determining the mix of radioisotopes in certain wastes were insufficient. SSI added that the shortcomings pose no immediate threat to the environment or the public. According to an SSI release, operations at the facility must stop on 21 June.
