Trekkopje output estimate doubled

[UraMin, 19 February] UraMin Inc announced that annual uranium production at its Trekkopje project in Namibia could be more than double that previously expected. SRK Consulting has conducted an update of the ongoing feasibility study for the project and suggests that output could exceed 3600 tonnes U3O8 (3000 tU), up from 1500 tonnes U3O8 (1270 tU) in a previous assessment. SRK's project scope contemplated an open-pit mine using a sodium carbonate/bicarbonate heap leach process at a large-scale mining rate of 100,000 tonnes per day. The earlier production estimate was based on tank leach processing, a method that uses much more water than heap leach. A trial mine is planned for the fourth quarter of 2007 and Trekkopje should begin commercial production in the fourth quarter of 2008. SRK's model envisages a two-year pre-production period, followed by a production period of eight years producing 27,670 tonnes U3O8 (23,460 tU), as well as 9072 tonnes of vanadium pentoxide. Trekkopje has seen a substantial conversion of 'inferred' to 'indicated' resources. 'Measured' and 'indicated' resources are now estimated at 144.6 million tonnes grading 146 ppm U3O8 equivalent, containing an estimated 21,000 tonnes U3O8. Inferred resources are estimated at 195.3 million tonnes grading 138 ppm, containing an estimated 27,000 tonnes U3O8.
