Application in for Grand Gulf licence renewal
The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has received an application for a 20-year extension to the operating licence for Entergy's Grand Gulf nuclear power plant in Mississippi. The 1204 MWe boiling water reactor's current licence is due to expire on 1 November 2024. Uprate work announced by Entergy in 2010 should see the plant's capacity increase by almost 14%. Under the terms of the US Atomic Energy Act, the NRC initially issues licences for nuclear power plants for 40 years of operation, which can be renewed for up to a further 20 years. The NRC has so far issued 71 such renewals, with another 14 applications including Grand Gulf currently under review.
