IBM defines knowledge management aims

The IBM Nuclear Power Advisory Councilheld its inaugural meeting last week, emerging with a list of 'topnuclear power industry imperatives'. The meeting was held at thecompany's Global Center of Excellence for Nuclear Power at La Gaude,France. Concluding that "efforts to increase nuclear power generationare hampered" by "several road blocks", the council said that riskelements for new build need to be managed with visibility, integrationof new technology into existing plants needed to be pushed, and theissue of an aging workforce was critical. The council said: "In theglobal nuclear industry, 25% of labour will be eligible to retire overthe next five years, and the internet generation is far from interestedin filling their ranks." Addressing these issues would be the work ofthe Center of Excellence in the coming period. Guido Batels, generalmanager, IBM global energy and utilities industry, said "advancedtechnologies are crucial to overcome IT design and implementationchallenges have traditionally held the industry back." Craven Crowellof the council said, "Only by working together, and embracing newtechnologies and new ways of collaborating will companies be able tomanage and transfer knowledge."
