Tax incentives for new Brazilian reactor

Brazil's Ministry of Mines and Energy has announced its decision to allow tax incentives for the construction of the Angra 3 nuclear power reactor. The ministry has included the project in the Special Incentive Regime for Infrastructure Development (REIDI), which exempts infrastructure investments from payment of federal social contributions. The incentive suspends the contributions to PIS (Program for Social Integration) and COFINS (Contribution for the Financing of Social Security) from the sale of machinery, equipment, instruments and building materials used in important infrastructure projects. Two reactors are already operating at Angra. Angra 3 was planned as the twin to Unit 2, but construction work never began despite the delivery of about 70% of the plant components. Eletronuclear is awaiting final approval to complete the 1220 MWe pressurized water reactor, which could go into commercial operation by late 2014.
