Uranium analysis delays at African labs
[Mining Journal, 11 May] "Significant" delays are occurring at two of South Africa's largest geochemical laboratories due to the increased number of analysis requests for uranium ore samples. Adriana Alexandru, manager of ALS Chemex Africa, said the delays were due to the "sheer volume of work for uranium analysis due to the level of exploration in southern and western Africa." She said that Chemex is adding staff, acquiring more equipment and expanding its facilities. Ed Kabel of SGS Mineral Services said the company was hiring additional staff and installing new equipment in order to meet demand. UraMin, which is exploring for uranium in Namibia and South Africa, said it is waiting six to eight weeks to obtain assay results. The company said it is developing technology with Chemex to reduce sample processing times to five days.
