New impetus from Yucca legislation
Legislation intended to 'facilitate' the development of the Yucca Mountain radioactive waste respository project has been submitted to the US Congress. It should withdraw the site and surrounding land from public use and lift the facility's statutory capacity limit.

Talks are in progress between Russia and Japan over the enrichment ofuranium recovered from the recycling of used nuclear fuel. It isJapan's policy to recycle its nuclear fuel to limit the amount ofuranium it has to import and to reduce the amount of waste for disposal.

Areva NC has despatched its twelfth and final shipment of vitrified high-level waste (HLW) from the La Hague reprocessing plant in France to Japan. Six casks holding 130 canisters of HLW are now en route via the Panama canal.
