Completion of Olkiluoto 3 set for 2011

02 January 2008

Teollisuuden Voima Oy (TVO) announced on 28 December that construction of its Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power reactor in Finland will now not be completed until summer 2011. The company said that the unit's turbine building has reached its roof-top height and the first turbine components, supplied by Siemens, have arrived in Finland. Installation of the turbine generator is scheduled to begin in April. TVO said that all major buildings at the reactor plant are now under construction. In addition, the manufacture of major components is proceeding to the factory test phase. The assembly of the reactor pressure vessel has already been completed in Japan. However, the Areva-Siemens consortium, which is constructing the reactor, has informed TVO that construction of the unit will not be completed until summer 2011. The delay of the project "will cause additional work and costs," TVO said. The company announced in August 2007 that delays in construction had likely pushed the completion date into 2011 from the originally scheduled 2009 date.
